Who Is God? – Understanding the Truth

The question of who God is has been asked throughout history. Many people believe that evidence of God can be seen in the world around us and felt within human conscience. The Bible itself does not try to prove God’s existence but begins by declaring it as truth (Genesis 1:1). It then reveals who God is, what He is like, and how He relates to humanity.

What Is God?

Having a clear understanding of God is very important. When people misunderstand God, they can form beliefs that do not reflect His true nature. God can be described as the highest and ultimate being—the Creator of everything that exists. He is self-existent and perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness (Psalm 90:2; Revelation 4:11).

The Nature of God

According to Scripture, God is spiritual and not limited by physical form (John 4:24). He is one God, yet revealed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

God is eternal and unchanging (Malachi 3:6; 1 Timothy 1:17). He is beyond comparison (2 Samuel 7:22), and His presence is everywhere (Psalm 139:7–10). God knows all things (Psalm 147:5) and has complete authority over all creation (Revelation 19:6).

The Character of God

God’s character reveals how He deals with humanity. He is just and will judge rightly (Acts 17:31). He is loving and rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4–5). He is truthful and faithful (John 14:6).

God is holy, completely pure and separate from sin (1 John 1:5). He is compassionate and full of grace (2 Corinthians 1:3; Romans 5:17). While He does not ignore sin (Psalm 5:5), He offers forgiveness to those who seek Him (Psalm 130:4).

The Work of God

Understanding what God does helps us better understand who He is. God created the world and everything in it (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 42:5). He continues to sustain all things (Colossians 1:17).

God is working through history according to His purpose (Ephesians 1:11). He provides a way for humanity to be saved from sin and its consequences (Galatians 3:13–14). He draws people to Himself (John 6:44), corrects and disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6), and will one day judge the world in righteousness (Revelation 20:11–12).

Having a Relationship with God

God desires a personal relationship with humanity. Through Jesus Christ, God made a way for people to come closer to Him. The Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1:14).

Jesus is the way between God and man (John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5). Through Him, people receive forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), are reconciled to God (Romans 5:10), and receive eternal life (2 Timothy 2:10).

To truly understand who God is, we look at Jesus Christ, because He reveals God’s nature in a way we can understand (Colossians 2:9).

Conclusion

God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all things. He is powerful, wise, loving, and just. Though He is beyond full human understanding, He has revealed Himself so that people can know Him.

Knowing God is not just about knowledge—it is about a relationship built on faith, truth, and understanding His presence in everyday life.
